About our Instruments
Instrument, sounds and sound FX constitute any product that includes a musical note, hit, one-shot or sound effect. Whether it be a violin instrument multi-sample or a drum hit, a sound is any pitched or unpitched recording.
Instrument - An instrument or virtual instrument is a multi-sampled MIDI instrument built with samples. (a sample is defined below.) Instruments contain samples and keymaps or patches which map or position the samples on the MIDI keyboard. These instrument patches or files are formatted specifically for software or hardware sample playback devices such as Kontakt, EXS24, HALion, Gigastudio, etc. Some instruments come with a sample playback engine. This instrument, sample playback engine combination is commonly referred to as a Virtual instrument. Virtual instruments can be a standalone computer program or a plugin for a digital audio workstation or both. Many of the Big Fish Audio Virtual Instruments are packaged with the Kontakt PlayerŞ engine allowing standalone use as well as the ability to use the library as a plugin in VSTi, Audio Units, RTAS and DXi.
Sound - A sound is commonly referred to as a one-shot or a single event. The file containing the sound is referred to as a Sample. As Sample is any recording and is usually a small part of a bigger performance or library of recordings. A recording of a single snare drum hit is one of the most common items labeled as a Sound. Three recordings of a snare drum, soft, medium and loud would constitute a simple Library of drum samples. This simple library of three drum samples can be mapped to a MIDI keyboard, creating an Instrument.
Sound FX - Sound FX or Sound Effects are recordings of non-musical events. This library of Sound FX samples creates a sound effect library that can be used in audio, video and cinematic production. Sound Design referees to sounds effects that are created using manipulated audio recordings or synthetically generated by electronic equipment or software.
